What to Expect in Your First Grief Counselling Session
You've thought about booking a grief counselling session for weeks. Maybe months. You've had the tab open. You've read the bio of a grief counsellor three times. And still, something stops you. You want support, but another layer of uncertainty is scary.
This is one of the most common things we hear from people before their first session: I don't even know what to expect or “I should be able to do this on my own”.
So here is what to expect during your first grief therapy session.
The First Grief Counselling Session
Your first grief counselling session is not a test, and it is not the moment you're expected to "get into it." It's a 50-minute conversation where your counsellor gets to know you, your loss, and what brought you in, at whatever pace feels survivable. You are not required to tell the whole story. You are not required to cry, or not cry. There is no version of this session you can do wrong. There is no expectation from your counsellor that you can summarize your loss in a concise way nor tie your grief up in a tidy bow.
You will only be asked to show up for yourself and your grief counsellor will take it from there. Our grief counsellors have been where you are, have experienced loss themselves and will move at your pace.
At Adventuring Loss, grief counselling sessions take place online, allowing you to meet with your counsellor from a private, comfortable space anywhere in British Columbia.
Before you Book: The Free Consultation
At Adventuring Loss, we start with a free 20-minute consultation, not a full session. This is a low-stakes conversation to make sure the fit feels right. You'll talk briefly about what's bringing you in, ask any questions you have, and get a sense of your grief counsellor before committing to anything. Many people find that this step alone takes the edge off the unknown.
It does not require you to have "processed" anything yet.
It does not require a clear narrative — grief rarely arrives in order.
It does not require you to be in crisis, or conversely, to justify why you're seeking support for something that happened "a while ago." Grief doesn't run on a timeline, and neither does the right time to get support.
It does not require you to know what you need. Naming that you don't know is a completely valid place to start.
The free session is a chance to see if one of our grief counsellors feels like a good fit for you.
We Specialize in Complicated Grief & Traumatic Loss
Many people arrive at grief counselling already having tried something else, perhaps a general therapist, a coach, a doctor — and have been gently referred onward because what they're carrying has layers. The loss and the trauma and the family dynamics and the identity rupture are all tangled together, and it didn't fit neatly into a shorter conversation.
If that's you, your first session will likely spend more time understanding those layers - not to categorize your grief, but so your grief counsellor knows the terrain before walking into it with you. This is exactly the kind of complexity our team is trained to hold.
After the First Few Therapy Sessions
You'll typically leave with a general sense of how ongoing work might look - frequency, focus, and what your counsellor noticed that might be useful to build from. There's no obligation to continue if it doesn't feel right, and no pressure to have "figured something out" in one hour. One session rarely produces a breakthrough. What it can offer is the relief of having said something out loud, in a room with someone not only trained to support you, but has personally walked the path of loss.
Our Grief Counsellors are Ready When You Are
If you've been sitting with the tab open, that's a familiar place to start. A free 20-minute consultation is a small, low-pressure way to find out if this is the right fit, with a team that specializes in exactly the kind of grief that doesn't fit into a tidy timeline. Our sessions are covered by most extended health insurance plans in BC.
Your grief is welcome here. Let’s navigate it together.
